School-aged children living in West Valley attend schools in the Granite School District, which serves a number of cities across central Salt Lake County. Approximately 70,000 students are enrolled yearly at this district, which is comprised of 60 elementary schools, 16 junior high schools, eight high schools and two alternative high schools. As the second largest school district and one of the top employers within the state, the Granite School District provides its students with a challenging and focused curriculum, gifted and talented programs, a low teacher to student ratio, and has been recognized on a national level for its teacher professional development programs.

Mountain West College – Salt Lake City, a private, two-year college is located within the city of West Valley. Colleges, universities, and trade/vocational schools located around the West Valley area include University of Utah; Salt Lake Community College; Brigham Young University; Utah Valley State College; Weber State University; and Utah State University.

Attractions & Points of Interest

If you’re a sports fanatic, then West Valley is the place for you! The ‘E’ Center is home to the Utah Grizzlies, the International Hockey League Champion team, and was also the playing field of the 2002 Winter Olympic ice hockey games. Inside the ‘E’ Center is the Ford Theatre, which can house crowds up to 3,700 in size and an additional 12,000 in the main arena. If you’re more of a do-it-yourself kind of sports fan, drive out to Park City (about 30 miles east of Salt Lake City) and check out the Utah Olympic Oval, home to the speed skating events of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. This facility is open to the public and includes rinks for ice hockey, speed skating, in addition to an indoor soccer field and a running track.

For live theatre patrons, the Hale Centre Theatre at Harman Hall is the largest center-stage theatre in the country. The Theatre is set on over 41,000 square feet and can seat up to 560 people. But what really makes this theatre so unique is that the stage can rotate and elevate in certain sections. Seven live productions are shown at the Theatre throughout the year, including comedies, musicals and dramas.

If it’s an outdoor experience you’re looking for, be sure to stop by the USANA Amphitheatre for a concert you’ll never forget! The Amphitheatre seats 20,000 people in an outdoor environment and is used primarily for music concerts. Past guests have include Radiohead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Steve Miller Band, The Cure, and Jack Johnson, to name a few. Another outdoor venue is the Utah Cultural Celebration Center at the Riverfront. The Cultural Center features a 1,200 seat outdoor amphitheatre, 28 acres of open space for festivals, a 74,000 square foot Arts and Heritage Hall Community Center, and an art gallery. Concerts and festivals, and other community-wide events are regularly held at this venue.

Parks & Recreation

Everyone knows that Utah is an outdoor enthusiasts’ recreational haven. Since West Valley is so close to Salt Lake City and a short driving distance to Park City, winter sports enthusiasts have plenty of outdoor activities to do around here during the winter. Snowboarding, skiing, and snowmobiling are just a few of the popular activities that locals and visitors take part in. And even if you’re not quite a snow bunny, you can check out the lakes and go fishing or hiking in Wasatch-Cache National Forest, Wasatch Mountain State Park, Uinta National State Park, or at Antelope Island State Park. Don’t forget the Great Salt Lake, a must-see attraction for its magnificent size, high salinity levels, and the wildlife that inhabit the area. Additionally, there are over 20 city parks located throughout West Valley.

For residents and visitors interested in a game of golf, West Valley offers two spectacular golf courses in the city. Stonebridge Golf Club features 27 holes of golf in a link-style layout designed by Johnny Miller, a U.S. Open Champion golfer. Perfect for novice and advanced golfers, this course includes three challenging nines and three additional teeing areas. Westridge Golf Course, also known by locals as “The Ridge,” is a municipal golf course that offers incredible views of the Salt Lake Valley and the Wasatch Mountains. Over 8,000 trees have been planted at this Bill Neff-designed course, making it one of the most serene and gorgeous courses in West Valley. Other golf courses within driving distance of West Valley include the Glendale Golf Course, Meadow Brook Golf Course, Fore Lakes Golf Courses, Murray Parkway Golf Course, and Wingpointe Golf Course.
